The Warren Center welcomes its newest affiliate, Hamsa Bastani

Hamsa Bastani completed her PhD in Stanford's Electrical Engineering department and spent a year as a Herman Goldstine postdoctoral fellow at IBM Research before joining Penn. Her work is inspired by applications to healthcare operations management, revenue management, and sustainable supply chains.

The Warren Center welcomes its newest postdoc, Jieming Mao

Jieming Mao, hosted by Michael Kearns, Aaron Roth and Rakesh Vohra, graduated with a PhD from Computer Science Department at Princeton University and is interested in multi-armed bandit, algorithmic mechanism design, communication complexity and information theory.

Morgan Stanley Hires Ex-SAC Capital Artificial Intelligence Expert

Morgan Stanley, which aims to expand its use of artificial intelligence, has hired Warren Center Director Michael Kearns to help guide the effort. He will lead Morgan Stanley’s AI research and offer advice on deploying the technology for projects across the company.

Machine Learning Researchers Try to Improve Working Conditions for Amazon’s Mechanical Turk Workers

As a way of giving back to the platform he uses for research, Chris Callison-Burch developed a Google Chrome plug-in that helps Turk workers pick out better-paying tasks. Callison-Burch and collaborators also analyzed data they gathered from the plug-in’s users to reveal trends in Turk worker earnings, published in a recent paper.

Michael Kearns and Ani Nenkova have been developing a course, tentatively titled “Science of Data Ethics,” that they hope to offer to undergraduate students in the spring of the 2018-2019 academic year. The class will focus on ethical issues such as privacy and discrimination in machine learning.
